What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating filiform needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain or for other healing purposes. The filiform needles are solid, extremely fine (0.007 to 0.020 inches or 0.18 to 0.51 millimeters in diameter) stainless steel needles used in acupuncture. They are disposable, sterilized and far smaller then the needles used for hypodermic injections since they do not need to be hollow. The type, size, and insertion depth used by the acupuncturist depends on what style of acupuncture is being used. Because the acupuncture needles are fine, flexible, and no bigger than a human hair, they tend to produce little or no sensation at all when they are inserted. Typically between 5 to 20 needles are used in a typical treatment. Linda may sometimes gently move or twirl the needles after they've been placed. Yet another option is to apply heat or a mild electric pulses to the needles. Usually, the needles will remain in place for 15 to 30 minutes while you lie still and relax. There is usually no sensation or discomfort when the needles are removed.
